Fashion is deeply personal, but when men were surveyed about the styles they dislike on mature women, these 10 choices came up repeatedly.

Fashion is subjective, but we asked men which styles they don’t like to see mature women wearing, and these 10 kept popping up.

Chunky platform shoes

Chunky platform sneakers and oversized soles are back in style, but aren’t loved by everyone. Men often find very bulky shoes to be heavy or clumsy-looking, particularly when paired with an otherwise sleek outfit.

Oversized shoes can also visually alter the proportions of an outfit and send attention directly to the feet. Slimmer sneakers, loafers, boots, or low heels can provide a more classic appearance while still offering comfort.

Extremely oversized clothing

Baggy shirts, dresses, and pants might be comfortable, but they can also swallow you up. When your top, bottom, and middle are all billowy, your entire outfit loses definition and can make even high-end garments look sloppy.

Most men prefer clothes that have at least a bit of structure, so they appear more polished. That doesn’t necessarily mean skin-tight clothing, either. Having a defined waist, fitted shoulders, or an overall better silhouette will help.

Too many statement accessories at once

Accessories are a great way to take your ensemble to the next level. However, many bold accessories worn at once can start fighting for attention. Large hoop earrings, a few necklaces worn at once, giant sunglasses, an oversized belt, and a colorful purse can be overwhelming.

Many men say that they like it when a woman wears one or two eye-catching accessories as the center of attention. Doing this allows each piece to shine rather than getting lost in the grouping.

Head-to-toe animal print

Taking leopard, zebra, and snakeskin prints to their fullest extent and wearing them head-to-toe can be controversial for some. Wearing an entire outfit composed of an animal print can be very distracting for some men. They feel that the print steals the attention from the woman wearing it.

Try a scarf, blouse, handbag, or shoes to add some flair to your outfit without taking over. Many feel that animal print is best when combined with solid colors.

Leggings as pants

Leggings are comfortable and great for working out or relaxing, so it’s popular with women. What some men hate is when they become the go-to option for pretty much every situation, whether shopping or going out to dinner.

Depending on the material and cut, leggings can wash out an otherwise well-put-together look by making it very sloppy. Straight-leg pants, jeans, or relaxed fitted trousers can provide comfort but add shape to your outfit.

Clothes covered in large logos

Just because something is a high-end brand doesn’t mean it looks classy, especially when the name of the brand is plastered all over it. Big logos on shirts, purses, and coats may look tacky to someone who values a more subtle look.

Most men claim to care more about how a piece of clothing fits, feels, and looks than what logo is stitched across the fabric. Brand names can be hinted at with a small logo or special accessory.

Overly distressed jeans

Jeans with ripped bits have been around for years, and a couple of small tears can add an undone youthful vibe to your denim. But jeans with giant holes and dangling threads that show more skin than denim aren’t for everyone.

Some guys feel like massively shredded jeans are more sloppy than casually cool, especially at higher-end restaurants or when out with friends. Classic-fitting jeans or denim with only a little bit of distressing can be far simpler to wear and will never go out of style.

Matching tracksuits for every outing

Matching sweats and tracksuits are super comfy and have become way more acceptable as casual wear. However, some guys aren’t fans of athletic wear being worn for every occasion. What works for running errands might look too lazy for dinner, a party, or a night out.

Casual clothing can stay comfortable as you age, but trading a tracksuit for lounge pants, a basic dress, or chic jeans can elevate your outfit in seconds.

Neon colors and juvenile graphic tees

Bright colors can inject energy into your wardrobe, but neon from head-to-toe can be overkill and difficult to pull off. T-shirts plastered with cartoon characters, childish slogans, or novelty graphics can ruin an otherwise stylish outfit by making it look childish.

Many men prefer mature women who wear richer colors or more subtle tones and graphic shirts that appear more intentional as opposed to whimsical for no reason.

You don’t have to sacrifice all bright colors or silly T-shirts. A neon accessory, subtle print, or vintage graphic shirt can help you express yourself without looking like you still wear youth sizes.

Extremely complicated statement sleeves

Puff sleeves, big shoulders and excess ruffles all have the potential to give an outfit some flair. However, taken to extremes, these details can easily overpower the rest of your look. Oversized sleeves can be off-putting to some men, particularly when you pair them with other loud details like prints, jewelry or funky necklines.

Bold sleeves can also distort your proportions by adding a lot of bulk to your top half. In most cases, if you keep the rest of your outfit simple, an interesting sleeve will look flattering rather than excessive.

A man can look distinguished at any age, but a few surprisingly common mistakes can quietly work against him.

Getting older doesn’t make a man less attractive, but certain habits certainly can.

Dressing in outdated or poorly fitted clothes

Wearing clothing styles, cuts, or graphic T-shirts from 20 years ago, or wearing baggy boxes of clothes because they’re comfortable, can make a man appear dated or uncaring about how he looks. A modern man knows that attractive clothing is simple and well-fitted to his body in a comfortable way.

Fighting physical aging instead of leaning into it

Hair dye jobs that look unnatural, toupees that are too obvious, or heavy-handed cosmetic changes tend to call attention to what you’re trying to hide rather than the signs of aging themselves. Men who embrace their gray hair, go with a nice clean bald look, or own their age tend to exude confidence, which is very attractive.

Becoming dismissive of anything new

Acting like everything was better “back in my day” and complaining about today’s music, technology, and culture can make a man sound cynical, close-minded, and out of touch. Remaining inquisitive about the world, open to new concepts, and cultured with modern culture will keep a man youthful and exciting to converse with.

Letting basic grooming details slide

Young men can sometimes get away with basic grooming. As you mature, you need to focus on the details. Fluffy ear hair and nose hair, bushy eyebrows that haven’t been trimmed, jagged nails, and skipping the dentist make you look sloppy. Keep your grooming trimmed and fresh.

Holding court instead of having a two-way conversation

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-21990" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Shutterstock_2422416947.jpg" alt="Dissatisfied middle-aged gray haired bearded man arguing quarrel talking on video call sitting on sofa in room at home.
Wisdom comes with age and experience, but know that going on lengthy speeches, offering unwanted advice, or telling people about your war stories all the time can be perceived as bossy or narcissistic. The most attractive men are the ones who listen more than they speak, ask interesting questions, and care about others.

Neglecting posture and physical mobility

Hunching over, rounding shoulders, or moving with heavy stiffness sends the signals of being tired and low energy. Core strength training, along with posture and mobility work, not only benefits your health in the long run, but it also transforms the way a man moves by allowing him to exude energy.

Falling into an emotional or social rut

Lack of ambition or direction smothers attraction. If a man stops doing things he enjoys, discards his personal ambitions, or depends on his partner as his sole source of companionship, his world becomes smaller. When he maintains outside hobbies, ambitions, and strong friendships, he radiates energy.

Wearing the same signature scent from decades ago

Scents come and go, and those big, heavy colognes from decades ago can smell oppressive or archaic. Something light, modern, and subtle, or even just smelling fresh and subtle, is much more appealing than a whirlwind of nostalgia.

Over-relying on dad humor or self-deprecation

Having a good sense of humor is great, but relying constantly on tired jokes, corny dad humor, or how you hate getting old and useless can get annoying. Being confident is knowing how to love yourself without apologizing for your age.

Neglecting skin health

Growing up, most guys never had a skincare routine, so as adults, their skin gets dry and damaged from sun exposure. Just taking the time each day to moisturize, apply SPF, and hydrate keeps your skin looking healthy, rejuvenated, and well-groomed.

Leading with bitterness or unhealed cynicism

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-26984" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/shutterstock_2185415521-e1786717616195.jpg" alt="Angry frowning elderly gray-haired bearded man 40s years old wears brown shirt looking camera hold hands crossed isolated on plain yellow background studio portrait.
Life is full of disappointments, break-ups, and losses throughout the years. But walking around with past hurts, relationship baggage, or negativity hanging off your sleeve burdens your energy field. Positivity, warmth, and emotional intelligence are some of the sexiest attributes a mature man can exude.

The happiest long-term couples don't stop working on their relationship just because they've been together for decades.

After decades of marriage, the strongest couples often prove that lasting love is built in ordinary moments.

Disagreements without trying to hurt each other

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-20810" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Shutterstock_2337138851.jpg" alt="Senior couple, divorce and headache in fight, conflict or argument on the living room sofa at home.
50 years of marriage is not 50 years of no fights. Couples that make it for the long haul will have disagreements about money, kids, in-laws, chores, and everything in between. What’s different is how they fight.

They don’t allow one issue to become an assault on their partner’s character, and they try not to intentionally weaponize their insecurities. They focus on resolving the issue, not winning.

Still talking about ordinary things

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-15689" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Shutterstock_2475091821.jpg" alt="Senior couple, hug and love on sofa with happy marriage, support and conversation of retirement home.
Committed couples don’t just talk when there’s a big decision to be made or a serious problem to talk through. They discuss their day, maybe something silly they’ve noticed, what’s for dinner, or a story a friend told them.

Many of these small talks allow them to stay connected to their partner’s daily lives. Even after many years together, maintaining interest in the minutiae can be as vital as having meaningful conversations.

Appreciation for the little things

It can become easy to take for granted all of your partner’s efforts after being with someone for years. Happy couples keep noticing them.

Whether it’s a “thank you for making dinner,” “I love that you picked that up,” or “you always know how to cheer me up,” helping your partner know they are appreciated can stop fondness from becoming familiarity. Sometimes, simply knowing that your better half notices you can mean everything.

Little rituals of connection

Coffee in the morning, an after-dinner walk, a kiss goodbye before work, Friday night dinner, or watching a favorite show together may not seem all that romantic.

But they are small traditions that bring consistent moments of connection between work, kids, responsibilities, and later retirement. What starts out as mundane can become some couples’ favorite traditions over the years.

Accepting changes

Human beings evolve dramatically over the course of 50 years. Careers launch and conclude, bodies grow older, kids are born and depart the nest, priorities evolve, and personalities may mellow or intensify.

Partners who stay connected grow to understand each new phase of one another rather than forever longing for who they married many years ago. In a healthy long-term relationship, you repeatedly recommit to choosing that person all over again, as you both change.

Some independence

A healthy marriage is between two whole people, not two who lose themselves. Successful partners remain happy to grow apart.

They have hobbies of their own, friends outside of the relationship, and enjoy spending time alone. The more you have to yourself, the more you have to bring to each other.

Forgiving the small stuff

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-26976" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/shutterstock_1852594228-e1786717076789.jpg" alt="Portrait of smiling senior couple.
Sharing your life with a person for years means you will inevitably experience lots of annoying habits, forgotten errands, careless remarks, and petty disappointments. Couples who stand the test of time know which battles are worth fighting and which aren’t worth holding onto for decades.

Forgiveness is not allowing yourself to be badly mistreated. It’s refusing to keep a running tally of every mundane infraction your partner has committed.

Shared laughter

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-26975" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/shutterstock_2716777913-e1786716965821.jpg" alt="Home, relax and old couple on couch, funny and happiness with love, romance and conversation.
Shared humor can get couples through some amazingly tough times. Couples that have been married for years tend to develop inside jokes, humorous anecdotes, silly names, and references that no one else knows.

While laughing together won’t solve your problems, it can help tough times feel less trying. After many years with a person, knowing that you can make each other laugh is a special type of intimacy.

Facing problems together

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-26973" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/shutterstock_2594699353-e1786716640349.jpg" alt="Smiling old couple sitting at table and sharing coffee in their cozy kitchen.
Financial stress, sickness, unemployment, in-law drama, parenting conflicts, and loss can create incredible stress on a marriage. Solid couples know that the person next to them is not automatically the enemy.

They don’t ask, “Whose fault is this?” Instead, they ask, “What are we going to do about it?” That teamwork mentality is critical during hard times.

Choosing each other

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-26974" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/shutterstock_2475095267-1.jpg" alt="Kitchen, hug and senior couple in home for love, bonding relationship and commitment together.
No relationship is passionate and thrilling every day for 50 years. Happy couples who live to celebrate 50 years of marriage know that love is a feeling and a choice we make every day.

In times of drought or turmoil, the cornerstone of commitment keeps the building intact until the sunshine and intimacy resume on their own.

Every relationship has complaints, but some phrases have been repeated so often that many men are simply tired of hearing them.

Behind many repeated complaints is a real problem, but saying the same thing for the hundredth time may not be the best way to solve it.

“You never listen to me”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-26022" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Shutterstock_2785252559.jpg" alt="Frustrated couple arguing on a living room sofa, showing tension, emotional strain and miscommunication during a domestic disagreement.
Few things put someone on the defensive quicker than hearing they never listen. Occasionally there may actually be a communication issue, but “never” generalizes one instance into a statement about the whole relationship.

Most guys would prefer you tell them exactly what they missed or what you need from them instead of telling them they can’t listen.

“You never help around the house”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-26195" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Shutterstock_2221773223.jpg" alt="Bored woman tired of ironing clothes at home watching in frustration while doing household chores.
Chores are absolutely grounds for fighting in a relationship if someone is shouldering an unreasonable load. However, saying “you never help” ignores what your partner does do and sounds blaming.

A constructive conversation about the division of labor involved in cooking, cleaning, laundry, childcare, home repairs, etc. can be more helpful than mentally keeping score.

“Why can’t you be more like him?”

Comparisons to another woman’s husband, an ex, a brother-in-law, or even some fictional ideal guy can be hurtful. No one likes being told someone else is richer, more romantic, more successful, or more attentive.

If something is lacking in your relationship, most men would rather hear what their partner wants than be told another man obviously does it all.

“You’re always on your phone”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-27036" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/shutterstock_2409642165-e1786806064427.jpg" alt="Indignant, offended, hysterical woman screams at husband sitting on sofa with cellphone.
Sometimes, this complaint is warranted, particularly when your phone interrupts date nights or family dinners multiple times. However, it can become annoying when every couple of minutes you spend responding to messages, reading the news or killing time online is seen as slight.

Couples may have to compromise on times when both partners turn off their phones and focus on one another.

“We never go anywhere anymore”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-18455" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Shutterstock_2662210229.jpg" alt="Young african american woman scolds boyfriend or husband On beige solid wall background.
Each partner may have different ideas about what “quality time” is. To one person, quality time means restaurants, trips, and pre-made plans, while the other person really enjoys spending quiet evenings together at home.

The request gets old when you say it over and over without defining what will help you feel more connected. “Can we get a dinner date planned for this weekend?” lets someone give you a clear yes or no.

“You’re not romantic anymore”

There are often more surprises, crazy dates, and nonstop attention in the beginning of relationships than there are after years of jobs, bills, kids, and responsibilities.

This doesn’t always mean the love is gone. Many times men show love in helpful ways, like fixing something that’s broken, brewing your coffee, driving you to somewhere you need to be, or helping out with something that’s troubling you, instead of filling your world with flowers and grand gestures.

Partners may even have to verbally tell each other what makes them feel loved instead of thinking they should know by now.

“You don’t tell me how you feel”

Men often have difficulty articulating emotions, especially if they were taught as children not to show weakness. Asking them repeatedly to explain exactly how they feel can cause them to shut down even more.

It doesn’t mean you should give up the dialogue of emotions; it just means giving them some room to have an honest talk may prove more effective than expecting them to give you the right answer instantly.

“You spend too much time with your friends”

Having friendships outside your relationship is perfectly healthy for both parties involved. Issues can develop when hanging out with friends or going out starts interfering with family life or your time together, but wanting friends should not be viewed as cheating.

Most relationships require some sort of middle ground where both individuals can have their own friends and social life while still making time for each other.

“I have to tell you everything”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-27038" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/shutterstock_2550193381.jpg" alt="Young family couple having problems in relationships.
This complaint can often be heard when one partner feels burdened with remembering dates, household tasks, children’s needs, birthdays, etc. That slight resentment is valid.

However, nagging someone about needing reminders could just lead to more fighting. Instead, you can come to an agreement on who is responsible for what so you don’t have to babysit your partner.

“You’ve changed”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-24266" src="https://us.canadianessence.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Shutterstock_2069274854.jpg" alt="Couple Quarreling Sitting on the Couch at Home, Boyfriend Screams Accusing Girlfriend.
Couples do not remain identical after 10 years together, or 20, or 30. Careers, kids, aging, stress, grief, and life experience alter people’s personalities and priorities. Rather than hurling “you’ve changed” as an accusation, it’s better to figure out what has changed and if the partners need to reconnect.
